Cannot send mail

Ferdinand Gruber
Hi,

don't know, why I am not able to send mail (as root). I get the
following error messages:

2014-05-08 12:33:00 1WiLdM-0004MS-R3 Cannot open main log file
"/var/log/exim4/mainlog": Permission denied: euid=102 egid=104
2014-05-08 12:33:00 1WiLdM-0004MS-R3 Failed to create spool file
/var/spool/exim4/input//1WiLdM-0004MS-R3-D: Permission denied
2014-05-08 12:33:00 1WiLdM-0004MS-R3 Cannot open main log file
"/var/log/exim4/mainlog": Permission denied: euid=102 egid=104
exim: could not open panic log - aborting: see message(s) above
Can't send mail: sendmail process failed with error code 1

I found a thread that recommended to do the following:

chmod u+s /usr/sbin/exim4

That did not solve the problem.

... now I tried:

chmod 660 /var/log/exim4/mainlog

... that did also not help.

Thank you for giving me a hint.

Re: Cannot send mail

Well, if group 104 is not the owner of that folder, and user 104 is not the
owner of the folder, it won't be able to access it, reading from the logs.
Also, folders should be marked executable, so your permissions should
probably be 0770. For folders, the execute permission allows the contents
of that folder to be listed.

Re: Cannot send mail

General mailing list
Now I deleted the user Debian-exim and the group Debian-exim and removed
the package exim4, using the command

        apt-get remove exim4

After that I deleted manually /var/spool/exim4 and /var/log/exim4

Then I tried to reinstall exim4:

            apt-get install exim4

            Reading package lists... Done
            Building dependency tree
            Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
               exim4-base exim4-daemon-light heirloom-mailx
            Suggested packages:
               eximon4 exim4-doc-html exim4-doc-info spf-tools-perl swaks
            Recommended packages:
               mailx
The following NEW packages will be installed:
               exim4 exim4-base exim4-daemon-light heirloom-mailx
0 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 641 kB/1934 kB of archives.
After this operation, 3160 kB of additional disk space will
            be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Y
            Get:1 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main
            exim4-daemon-light armel 4.80-7 [633 kB]
            Get:2 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main exim4 all
            4.80-7 [7806 B]
            Fetched 641 kB in 1s (399 kB/s)
            Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:E: Sub-process
/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

What goes wrong there?

Thank you for answer.

Unknown, the log is not specific enough. Recommend search online for "error
2 dpkg" or the man pages for dpkg.

Re: Cannot send mail

General mailing list
I looked at the web and found:

                        dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config

Now I was able to install *exim4*.

Thank you
Ferdinand
