Getting started again

Richard Bown
Hi Gurus,

I managed to get it reflashed, but Unslung didn't want to play, and debian is now to large.
In the end I flashed it with SlugOSBe/slugosbe-5.3-beta-nslu2.bin
Added a 2 GB flash drive, and I think the file system put on the stick. a few I/O errors

On the beasty there is now

root@LKGD6BA7D:~/opkg-WVwDr4-intercept-960-0# df
Filesystem           1K-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root                 6400      5468       932  85% /

root@LKGD6BA7D:~/opkg-WVwDr4-intercept-960-0# ls -la

drwxr-xr-x    4 root     root            0 May 13 22:22 ..

Both those dir s look empty. I was using debian before and I could get a package list with apt-get,
but what do I use on this ?
Trying to follow web pages is going around in circles.  I want to load Cups on it to use it as a
print server. Can some one assist please
TIA

I have two NSLU: one with unslung and the other one with sluosbe.
On both I'm using optware (which is using ipkg).
If you decided to go with sluosbe, install optware and use packages from
the optware feeds:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Packages
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/SlugOS/InstallandTurnupABasicSlugOSSystem

Hi
I've run the setup-optware.sh and it has downloaded ipkg.
It seems to be having problems downloading packages,
I've been trying to install cups and getting

root@LKGD6BA7D:/# ipkg install cups
Installing cups (1.4.6-1) to root...
Downloading http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/slugos5be/cross/unstable/cups_1.4.6-1_armeb.ipk
wget: short write
Nothing to be done
An error ocurred, return value: 22.
Collected errors:
ipkg_download: ERROR: Command failed with return value 1: `wget --passive-ftp    -q -P /opt/ipkg-K3q0dn http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/slugos5be/cross/unstable/cups_1.4.6-1_armeb.ipk'
Failed to download cups. Perhaps you need to run 'ipkg update'?

The url for the packages seems old ,   where does ipkg store its config.
In the mean time I'll try and find it and update to the one you gave, hopefully I maybe able to
install joe, I really don't like using vi
Thanks

Re: Getting started again

Ovidiu Sas-3
run:
ipkg update
ipkg install cups

The link is right and it is working ok for me.
Try to download the package manually with wget to veryfy that you can
download the package.:
wget http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/slugos5be/cross/unstable/cups_1.4.6-1_armeb.ipk
Make sure that DNS is properly setup on your SLUG and you can ping
ipkg.nslu2-linux.org

Hi
for some reason it did not like the mem stick I was using.
stick replaced and all loaded.
How is cupsd started on slugosbe 5.3 , Is it from init.d ,?
/opt/etc/init.d or /etc/init.d
service start cupsd  didn't function .so must be an earlier function

Thanks

Google for "debian 6 on nslu2". Debian 6 arm nslu2 is slightly slower than the others you listed but is nearly as feature complete as desktop debian gets on that tiny device.

Many thanks

I saw on the earlier page that Debian 5 was to big so it was no longer supported.
I'll give Debian 6 a try.
And hope the print modules are either in the kernel or easily added
